Department overview
Responsible for administering and ensuring compliance with applicable statutes in the areas of property taxes, elections and various licenses.
Our role
- Administers federal, state and local elections in Rice County.
- Maintains and updates voter registration information in the Statewide Voter Registration System
- Administers the absentee voting process for Rice County's voters
- Canvasses election results
- Performs accuracy testing of all county election equipment

Candidate filings for the 2022 Minnesota General Election
A list of candidates for offices elected at the Nov. 8, 2022 Minnesota General Election can be found here.
Candidate names are added during the filing period (Tuesday, May 17 through Tuesday, May 31) for most federal, state and county offices.
Candidate names are added during or after the filing period for local offices:
- Offices in cities and school districts that hold primaries - Tuesday, May 17 through Tuesday, May 31.
- Other municipal and school district offices - Tuesday, Aug. 2 through Tuesday, Aug. 16. Contact your local clerk for the correct filing period for your municipality or school district.
1st Congressional District Special Election
The governor has issued a Writ of Special Election to fill a vacancy for U.S. Representative for Congressional District 1. The vacancy was caused by the passing of U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn on Feb. 18, 2022. Congressional District 1 represents much of southern Minnesota.
Candidate campaign financial reporting
Effective May 17, 2014, Minnesota statues require all local governments who accept affidavits of candidacy, nomination petitions or place questions on the ballot to make required financial reports available online. These reports will be available for four years. Links to financial reports from Rice County candidates for office are below.
