Hazardous Waste

 

Household Hazardous Waste - The first rules about hazardous products are to avoid them if possible, or use them for their intended purposes. Improper use or disposal can be harmful to human health and the environment. The following signal words on the container label usually means it contains hazardous chemicals: DANGER, CAUTION, WARNING, POISON, FLAMMABLE, COMBUSTIBLE, CONTAINS PETROLEUM DISTILLATES, TOXIC, CORROSIVE, CONTAINS ACID, CONTAINS LYE, CAUSES BURNS TO THE SKIN, PROTECT SKIN & EYES, etc. Common examples include paint, thinners, stains, varnish, paint removers, cleaners, pesticides, adhesives, old gasoline, etc.

Business Hazardous Waste - The Rice County Solid Waste Department is licensed by the MPCA to accept VSQG (Very Small Quantity Generator) Business Hazardous Waste. Businesses MUST call 507-332-6833 (the Rice County Solid Waste Department) to pre-register, set up a delivery time and review the fee schedule.

Where to Bring Your Hazardous Waste - The Rice County Solid Waste Department has a year-round facility located on-site at the Recycling Center/Landfill which is halfway between Northfield & Faribault, approximately 1 mile to the east (off State Highway #3) on 145th Street East. Free paint and other useable items are also available at the facility.

Hazardous Waste Facility Hours for Households are:

 

Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

Saturdays:

     April thru October from 7:30 a.m. to 11;30 a.m. (2nd & 4th Saturdays ONLY)

     November thru March from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (2nd Saturday ONLY)

 

BUSINESS HAZARDOUS WASTE IS ACCEPTED BY APPOINTMENT ONLY
