Culture, academics, arts and technology form the backbone of the City of Northfield. This quaint town of 18,754 is set among the rolling hills and farms along the Cannon River just 35 miles from the Twin Cities.

The historic downtown area is set along the riverfront, offering many cultural, artistic and entertainment options. Those

who want a taste of a larger city can easily find it via Interstate 35, located within minutes of Northfield, and via nearby highways leading to the Twin Cities, or Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Northfield has a diverse business climate centered on multi-national corporations, national industrial firms, and smaller entrepreneurial companies. Many businesses are concentrated in the high tech, bio-tech and educational industries. The city is implementing an aggressive downtown plan aimed at further enhancing the business community. Plans are also underway for a third business park that will provide 300 acres of shovel-ready development opportunities for businesses.

Among the large employers in the community are Mom Brands (formerly known as Malt-O-Meal), a cereal manufacturer with its largest plant and two distribution centers in Northfield; Multek Flexible Circuits, a global leader in circuit development; Northfield Hospital, a 37-bed hospital with a long term care center; and McLane Compny, a grocery wholesale distributor. One noteworthy recent expansion is Aurora Pharmaceutical, a veterinary clinic and pharmaceutical company that completed construction of a 62,000-square-foot office, lab and production facility.

Businesses are drawn to Northfield because of its character, central location and access to a diverse labor pool. The city’s location near Interstate 35 makes it easy to access and pull customers and employees from surrounding areas as well.

Northfield is one of the two largest cities in Rice County and is also home to two premier colleges. St. Olaf, which serves 3,000 students, and Carleton, which serves 2,000 students. Both of these private liberal arts colleges help create a strong academic environment while also serving as top employers in the area, Northfield Public School District 659 offers a strong academic system for children in kindergarten through high school.

Northfield has many incentives to help businesses looking to expand in the area including loans, grants and tax incentives. Northfield is also a JOBZ community which allows the city to provide local and state tax exemptions to attract and retain businesses and help companies remain competitive and grow.
