Lonsdale is nestled on the northwest side of the country, less than seven miles west of Interstate 35. This location provides easy access to the Twin Cities and neighboring states and makes the town attractive to businesses and commuters. The town is more than 100 years old and offers a quaint small town environment with a growing business environment. The 2009 population was 2,879, more than doubling the population in the last decade. With the increased population, the city has invested in quality of life amenities that include a new library, ten parks, an eight-mile trail system, and a nature system. All make Lonsdale a great place to live and work.
The community has a great deal to offer including a robust fiber optic telecommunications system, which has encouraged business, growth in the healthcare, education, retail and financial services sectors. Additionally, the newly opened Family Health Medical Clinic of Lonsdale offers a full range of primary care with access to specialty medical services, and a new assisted living facility also recently opened- providing premier care for residents.
The area businesses are active in the Lonsdale Area of Chamber of Commerce. The city also has an Economic Development Authority (EDA) that has access to financial incentives to help grow businesses in the community. Some of the tools include a revolving loan fund, tax increment financing, tax abatement, JOBZ, and other loan and grant programs offered locally or by economic development partners. The city is currently working on developing another industrial area on the east side of town, which will provide additional business development opportunities within close proximity of Interstate 35.
Students are served by two school districts. The Montgomery-Lonsdale Public School District 394, which has 1,200 students, and the New Prague Public Area School District 721, which has 3,700 students.
