Board of Adjustment & Planning Commission
The Rice County Board of Commissioners appoints citizen representatives to serve on the Rice County Board of Adjustment and Planning Commission. The membership, terms and functions of both are set by Minn. Stat. Subd. 394.27 and 394.30 respectively. The Board of Adjustment and the Planning Commission generally meets on the first Thursday of the month in the Commissioners Room, Rice County Government Services Building.
The Board of Adjustment has the exclusive authority to hold public hearings reviewing appeals and variance requests of the Rice County Zoning & Feedlot Ordinances, making final decisions granting or denying those requests.
The Planning Commission has the authority to review and recommend to the County Board matters concerning Zoning, Re-Zoning, Conditional Use Permits, Preliminary & Final Plats, Ordinance amendments, and Comprehensive Planning, including land use recommendations.
Membership & Terms
The Board of Adjustment and the Planning Commission consists of five (5) members appointed by the County Board. The term of each appointed member is three (3) years. Each member may be eligible for reappointment, but not more than three (3) consecutive three (3) year terms. Meetings are held once a month or at the call of the Chairperson. Members are compensated in an amount set by the County Board. In addition to the (5) five members appointed on the Planning Commission, one Rice County Commissioner acts as non-voting ex officio member.
